Cancer is a group of diseases characterised by the uncontrolled growth and spread of abnormal cells. Risk factors and underlying biochemical imbalances contributing to cancer pathogenesis and development can be complex and varied.

Safe, practical and evidence-informed nutritional support for cancer patients can enhance the effectiveness of medical treatments, improve quality of life and help reduce treatment side effects. It has been proven that nutritional deficiencies or overloads can impact outcomes and in most cancers also affect the risk of progression and recurrence.

Improving general well-being and supporting a cancer patient throughout and after treatment is a top priority for complementary practitioners. Managing the tumour with the tools conventional medicine has to offer is crucial. But the challenge that many patients face is that it can lead to severe side effects like fatigue, digestive and neurological issues or pain. Nutritional therapy can be used to mitigate those side effects. And pre-clinical studies show that the ketogenic diet can be of benefit, too.

The Ketogenic Diet has quickly become a valid option
for anyone going through cancer treatment or recovering from it.

Used as a successful treatment against epilepsy since the 1920’s, the Ketogenic Diet restricts all but non-starchy vegetable carbohydrates and replaces them with low to moderate amounts of protein and high amounts of healthy fats.

The strength of the diet is metabolics. Most cancer cells need glucose to thrive. Carbohydrates turn into glucose in your body; lowering the glucose level in a cancer patient's blood through a low carb and protein diet will also have effects on insulin and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). As Angela Poff, a Research Associate in the Department of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology at the University of South Florida in Tampa states: "Insulin is a potent growth factor for cancer. It becomes pretty obvious that an attempt to [support] cancer [patients] would be something that lowers glucose and insulin. The ketogenic diet does that." Eating this way will help your patient convert your body from carb burning mode to fat burning.

The Ketogenic Challenge

As a practitioner, you’re certainly keen to apply the most evidence-informed, up-to-date nutritional approaches with your patients and to add as many arrows to your quiver as possible. If you’re not yet trained in the ketogenic diet - especially for cancer patients- I highly recommend you dive into the fascinating science of this metabolic approach and learn the nuts and bolts of this lifestyle.

Committing to the ketogenic diet can be challenging. Most cancer patients, while undergoing or recovering from treatment, are tired and overwhelmed with their cancer experience. They know that they want to support yourself, fight any recurrence of cancer and regain some control.

As the evidence mounts, the Ketogenic Diet is on their list of therapies to consider and they are more than ready and motivated to give it a try. However, many of them are unsure where to begin, how to best prepare or how to ensure their success. It’s not an easy task to tackle for people who aren’t equipped with science and nutrition knowledge.

  • are a new practitioner who wants to support cancer patients. You know that bringing your knowledge about the ketogenic diet up-to-date is crucial because many cancer patients have read and heard about it.
  • have been practising for a while and you keep coming across the ketogenic diet, especially in the context of cancer. You know the basic science of the approach but when it comes to using it with your clients, you simply don’t know where to start.
  • are keen to learn but you simply haven’t got the time to aquire all the knowledge by yourself. The ketogenic approach is hardly taught in any nutrition or other colleges (yet). You need a shortcut that will save you time and money.
  • are disillusioned because most of the resources you’ve come across for the ketogenic diet are for weight loss and epilepsy rather than cancer.
  • are scared that you might give the wrong advice and you’d like to learn from a fellow practitioner who hasn’t only guided many patients through the implementation of the diet, but who has been following this lifestyle for four years now.

I'm a nutritional therapist AND cancer survivor that has been on this same journey.

When I initially started researching the diet myself, I was at a point where I had nothing to lose (but my eye!). I was disillusioned because what I had learned in college didn’t help me get better, feel healthier and manage my illness. What I knew was that “having a balanced diet, exercise and getting plenty of sleep” , juicing and having a very clean diet just wasn’t enough and I wanted to give my body the best chance of recovering and protecting itself from another recurrence.

I came across research suggesting that sugar could be promoting the growth of my cancer. That cancer is a metabolic disease - which means that cancer cells produce their energy in a completely different way than healthy cells. They consume large amounts of glucose and make lactate from it.

The research made a lot of sense to me and with clinical trials underway,  numerous oncologists and reputable organisations have started promoting the ketogenic approach. Although research into it is pre-clinical at the moment, it's extremely encouraging. Also, because the diet has been used clinically for 100 years to treat refractory epilepsy, we have an abundance of safety data on long term use of the ketogenic diet.

I was hugely l enthusiastic and embraced the ketogenic diet with gusto to help manage my cancer.

BUT- I ran into many challenges and became frustrated very quickly. The idea and theory sounded great, but what on earth was I going to cook? What should cancer patients eat if they have to cut not only refined sugar but also almost all carbohydrates out of their diet? Without ruining their gut or develop nutrient deficiencies?

Through trial and error, much research and creativity, I developed a “magic formula” for the successful implementation of the ketogenic diet and, now, I’m excited to share it with you! As an experienced lecturer and speaker at conferences and in cancer centres, I know exactly what the main “pain points” and questions are from cancer patients.

  • 1

    Provide professional help

In my experience, people who receive plenty of support during the initial stages of implementing the diet are more likely to make this a sustainable lifestyle and maintain nutritional ketosis without much effort. You will be key to your patients, especially in the initial stages.

  • 2

    Balance knowledge and skills.

There is a lot of science behind ketogenic diets and we know what predictable metabolic changes happen when somebody goes into nutritional ketosis. Learning about the mechanisms of this approach- and where to look further to enhance your knowledge- will be incredibly helpful in working with doctors and other practitioners. Combining this knowledge with practical skills including cooking, shopping or meal planning, will provide the confidence you need to keep your patient on the right track.

  • 3

    Apply my proven step-by-step guide.

Many cancer patients want to make significant changes to their lives after a diagnosis. It usually involves an overhaul of diet, lifestyle, as well as mindset and how life is viewed. The goal is to feel relieved and calm with the help of a clear action plan.

  • 4

Make change enjoyable and fun rather than an annoying chore.

I’m sure you know that making massive dietary and lifestyle changes can be painful at the start. However choosing a lifestyle that supports your health is also incredibly rewarding when you start reaping the benefits and feeling full of energy.

  • 5

    Be supported by like-minded people

Support just can’t be underestimated! I know from experience that most cancer patients are bombarded with well meaning information from many friends, family members and other well-meaning people. When it comes to ketogenic diets, however, very few people really know what they’re talking about- even health professionals. You will have access to other practitioners through a closed facebook group where you can share information, knowledge and find support to overcome challenges.

  • 6

    Make it sustainable

Most cancer patients who feel well on a ketogenic diet choose to stay on it for a long time, often modifying the diet as time goes by. Learning how to follow the diet even when traveling, eating out or feeding a large family, is crucial for many people following this lifestyle. As a practitioner, you will get invaluable insights into how keto can be made sustainable and enjoyable in the long run.

I developed my formula for a safe and effective implementation ketogenic diet based on not only my own personal experience, but also the experiences of many clients.

I have identified the initial stumbling blocks and steps to work around them. In fact, cancer patients from all over the world have received my guidance and support with a ketogenic nutritional approach.

Now, I want YOU to have access to everything you need to help your patients successfully start a ketogenic diet- without overwhelm.

I thoroughly enjoyed your Masterclass! Congratulations—it is a huge accomplishment and such a badly needed resource in the world.

You do a stellar job of explaining complicated science in an accessible, welcoming, common sense way.

You have a lovely “stage presence” that puts people at ease.

But most impressive of all is that WOW, you really know your stuff. You know the science backwards and forwards and think about metabolism and food chemistry in a way that few others do. It is a very sophisticated knowledge base that you possess. I so often find myself disagreeing with big chunks of what other nutrition “experts” say about food and the body but during your course I found myself nodding in vigorous agreement with almost everything you said! You have really done your homework. Highly credible and trustworthy! I learned a lot along the way and thank you for this course.

My Cancer Journey

I was 28 when I was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, an ocular melanoma.

Conventional treatments helped to stop the growth of my tumour but didn’t have the long-term impacts for which we were hoping. The side effects from the treatments were severe and I felt like my body was out of sync.

After a relapse and lots of struggles with vision loss and other side effects, I was confronted with a difficult choice: taking my eye out or trying regular injections into the eye.

Since my diagnosis, I had been researching and studying nutrition for cancer and was frustrated by the conflicting information available to me. Still, I persisted because I knew deep down that nutrition was the most important step on my road to better health.

All the time, much of the information on cancer and nutrition focused on the benefits of raw foods, vegetarianism and veganism, plant-based diets and gluten-free whole grains like buckwheat and quinoa. I tried everything!

But I soon realized that my “clean” eating approach with lots of fruit and vegetables, whole grains and very little fat or protein hadn’t made any real difference for me.

In 2012, I came across the ketogenic diet and the notion of “cancer as a metabolic disease.” I was immediately fascinated by the research and the fact that ketogenics was used for diagnostic purposes (e.g. PET scans), but not for cancer management. I became very curious.

I spent a long time reading the latest studies, networking with experts in the field and also experimenting with recipes. I was intimidated and even a little afraid of starting the ketogenic diet.

Then, news of my eye getting worse pushed me to the limits and I just HAD to do something proactive and give the ketogenic diet a go- there was nothing to lose!

You see, in my case - and in many others - making small changes and eating clean just isn’t enough to make a difference.

Something radical needed to happen
- a metabolic shift in my body.

I had to teach my body to burn fat instead of glucose. I also had to change my way to exercise, become gentler with myself and learn to ask for help.

By making these significant changes to my diet and lifestyle, I slowly regained control of my life and felt more confident in myself. Now, I want to share this potentially life changing approach with other practitioners and enable YOU to do the same as I do with your patients. Trust me, it’s most rewarding to work with people affected by cancer as you will hardly come across a more motivated patient group!

That’s why I created the Keto For Cancer Masterclass.

I haven't found anything comparable on the market. I've found that most of the material available is in book form and only provides a brief introduction to keto and then recipes or meal plans. What makes your program so useful is that it gets down to the nitty-gritty of how it all works and exactly what you need to do. The charts and downloads you provide have been invaluable. The video format helps me to understand and also makes it more engaging and interesting.

What makes this program different is that [Patricia] lives keto every day and has for several years. She's not just re-writing something she heard somewhere else, and that's obvious when she teaches it. It's also more thorough than anything else I've found.

  • q-iconCan anybody follow a ketogenic diet?

No. I would be lying if I said it was easy and didn’t require any particular commitment! Patients need to be willing and able to make change, otherwise they will not get the desired results. In my experience, cancer patients are a highly motivated patient group that are more than willing to make change.

Also, there are clear contraindications to a ketogenic diet and it is important that you read this blog post here before you consider starting the diet with a patient.

  • q-iconIs the ketogenic diet effective and safe?

While there are many case reports and pre-clinical studies confirming the effectiveness and safety of the ketogenic diet, we are still waiting for the results of clinical trials. We do have a strong safety record from the use of the ketogenic diet in epileptic patients, though. I don’t recommend doing the ketogenic diet as a stand-alone treatment (i.e. without doing conventional treatment) and recommend that cancer patients always consult their oncologist before embarking on a ketogenic diet.

  • q-iconCan you guarantee that my patients will be in nutritional ketosis after me guiding them through your programme?

No, there is no guarantee for anybody that they will be in nutritional ketosis after following the programme. Everybody responds differently- some people go into ketosis within a few days whereas for others it can take weeks or sometimes even months.

Your patients will be on a clear path to nutritional ketosis, though, and benefit from the knowledge they acquired while implementing the diet.

  • q-iconWhat happens if someone suffers from food allergies or intolerances?

There will be lots of recipes, guidelines and tips available that also cater for different allergies and intolerances. I have several tools that can help you detect intolerances.

  • q-iconDo I learn how to fine tune my patient's protocol?

You can fine tune your patient’s programme based on your blood tests and food preferences/sensitivities but also depending on where you live and the seasons.

You will learn how to calculate macronutrient ratios, tailor meal plans to your patient’s needs, incorporate other strategies to enhance ketosis like calorie restriction, fasting, lifestyle changes and others .

  • q-iconCan the ketogenic diet be followed on a restricted budget?

This is a very common problem. Many cancer patients have probably already spent lots of money on treatments, supplements or equipment. That’s why I’ve included a section on eating on a budget that provides lots of tips, tools and techniques to make the ketogenic diet affordable.

  • q-iconWhat about vegetarians or vegans?

I’ve guided cancer patients through a vegetarian or vegan ketogenic diet before, however it does require even more specialised guidance than ketogenic diet that includes animal products. It’s doable but not something I encourage. A vegan diet undoubtedly needs specific support with supplements.

  • q-iconWhat if my patient is still going through cancer treatments?

There’s an increasing amount of evidence showing how ketosis and fasting can enhance the effects of cancer treatment. While it can be challenging to stay in ketosis especially during chemotherapy, there are more and more tools available to practitioners to make this task as easy as possible for cancer patients. This is an area that is undergoing rapid change and I will do my best to keep up with current research and share this with practitioners.

  • q-iconCan I do this course if I'm not based in Europe?

Although I’m based in Europe (Ireland), many of the practitioners on my course (and indeed my clients) are based in the USA, Australia, South Africa or the Middle East. It doesn’t matter where you live, you’ll be able to study and connect from anywhere in the world and start implementing my blueprint.
